2017 was one of the harshest summers witnessed in recent times, the river Kaveri ran dry and an old dispute intensified yet again.
Who gets the principle ownership over the river, Karnataka which has the source, or Tamilnadu which has the mouth?
The people of Karnataka or the people of Tamilnadu ?
In the summer, when there was no real river to speak of, how was one to reckon with the absence?
Was the river still a river? What is a river?
Along with these questions came a deep need to walk along the entire stretch of Kaveri. To experience it beyond cultural understanding, to feel it as a primitive landscape, to attempt to make contact with a space and time from where everything began or where everything would end.
So I began what would become a seventy two day long walk along the river Kaveri in 2018. From the mouth to the source and back.
Walking into the essence of things, to the very essence of my being and the river.
A meditation upon the poise and the patience of nature.
In the Tamil language, 'Idai Veli' means 'gap'
The space between things, between beings,
The time between moments, between seasons
The space and/or time that separates and connects all of us beings
